Interstellar came out just over 10 years ago. It is still one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen; the score, the acting and especially the concept. Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie yet!
The film is a sci-fi epic directed by Christopher Nolan that follows Cooper, a former pilot turned farmer, as Earth faces ecological collapse. A secret NASA mission recruits him to find a new habitable planet for humanity by traveling through a wormhole near Saturn. Cooper and his team explore distant worlds while grappling with time dilation, which separates him from his daughter, Murph, who ages rapidly on Earth. The film delves into themes of love, survival, and sacrifice, as Cooper ventures into a black hole to uncover the key to humanity’s survival. Murph ultimately deciphers his messages, saving Earth’s population.
When I accepted a job flying a Learjet for an international medevac company, it felt like a golden opportunity. The role promised adventure, career growth, and the chance to travel the world—perfect for my exploratory nature. But it came with a heavy cost: leaving my two young daughters behind in Winnipeg. Split from their mother, who wasn’t willing to move, I told myself it was temporary and chose to go. Still, a part of me wrestled with the decision, urging me to stay.
A month into the job, I was enjoying the work, but the ache of missing my girls grew unbearable. Then, I watched Interstellar. It was like watching my own dilemma play out. Cooper’s choice to leave his children mirrored my own, and his emotional journey resonated deeply. While I wasn’t traversing wormholes or separated by galaxies, the distance between us felt just as profound. The film’s theme—symbolized by the word “STAY” in Morse code—hit me hard. It solidified my regret and my realization of what truly mattered.
That single word became my reminder of a pivotal moment. It represents the weight of my choices and the enduring lesson: family comes first. Ultimately, I found a flying job back in Winnipeg and chose to stay. And it made all the difference. Years later, under another profession, I found myself coming back to this time of my life. I had thought of this sticker for years And finally i made it. What a beautiful moment. And it has since become one of the better selling designs in the pack.
Until next time, keep looking up and go watch Interstellar!
